In a world where the metal industry is predominantly dominated by men, at Jatec, two women currently shine: Alexandra and Miriam. How did they actually end up in this field of work, and how do they experience working among all those men? One thing is certain, these women have proven that working in the metal industry is not just for men!
How did you end up at Jatec and what do you do here?
Alexandra: “I come from Poland, so when I first arrived in the Netherlands, I had a job as an order picker, but I didn’t find it challenging enough. I wanted to do something else, and on the recommendation of my friend, I followed a training course to become a CNC miller. In the meantime, I have been working at Jatec for about a year as an operator/CNC miller. It’s also my first job in the metal industry, but I really enjoy it here. Time seems to fly by every day! I learn new things daily, and that’s what makes me happy.”
Marian: “I’ve been working in the metal industry for almost 30 years, and I ended up here purely by chance. Years ago, someone showed up at my door and asked if I wanted to work for their company, and I said yes. During that time, I learned everything about milling, turning, and other tasks within this industry. I also underwent training, which allowed me to work full-time afterwards. Now I’ve been working for Jatec for 7 years, initially doing various tasks, helping out wherever needed. Then the position of tool manager became available, and I’ve been in this role ever since.”
Do you think it’s difficult for women to work in the metal industry?
Alexandra: “I don’t find it difficult to work here. When I first started, it took some getting used to, but now I’m just part of the team. Initially, it was challenging to find a job in this field as a female CNC miller because you have to prove yourself extra.”
Marian: “When I started working in the metal industry 30 years ago, it was tough. The men didn’t always appreciate having a woman on the team back then. Now, I’m truly part of the team, and we complement each other.”
What are the benefits of having a mix of men and women in the workplace, in your opinion?
Marian: “Women tend to be a bit more precise than men, but sometimes a bit more uncertain. Men figure things out on their own, which can sometimes lead to mistakes, whereas women are often more cautious and seek help from colleagues sooner. It’s good to have both in the workplace so that this is well balanced.”
Alexandra: “I’m not very strong myself, so I appreciate it when a male colleague can help me lift something heavy!”
What advice would you give to women who are interested in a career in the metal industry?
Marian: “If you’re interested, just start. Begin with a training program, and you’ll naturally transition into the work. Nowadays, the work isn’t as physically demanding anymore because most of it is lifted by machines and cranes. Don’t let the number of men deter you; they will accept you!”
Alexandra: “If you’re not sure if you’ll enjoy the work, you can always take a look. I was seeking more challenge in my work, and that’s how I stumbled into this field by chance. Now, I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I’m truly proud of the work I do here, especially when it’s a more challenging project and I still manage to get it right the first time.”
Are there any other things you would like to convey?
Marian: “Yes, I think it’s such a shame that there’s not much focus on technology in education. Boys and girls should be exposed to this more, so they know how enjoyable it is to work with your hands. We work with our hands all day here, but we’re not dirty when we come home.
